"Need For Speed" Coming to the Big Screen From EA and Dreamworks
Fact: if this isn't a de facto remake of Cannonball Run, I'm going to be really disappointed.
The announcement came through both press releases and a tweet from the Need For Speed Twitter feed early this morning.
The racing series will be zooming to theaters coast to coast as production gets underway with the folks behind She's Out of My League (George Gatins) and Real Steel (John Gatins) producing, according to a post over on Gamasutra, in a deal that's been in the works since April (THR). My hopes for a modern day take on the Burt Reynolds/Dom Deluise classic aside, it's likely (as The Hollywood Reporter piece notes) that Dreamworks might try to get their own Fast and the Furious heat with a muscle car franchise of their own.
The Need For Speed series has always had something on the level of cinematic aspirations, with titles like 2008's Need For Speed: Undercover bringing in performers like Maggie Q for live-action sequences to give their racing games an extra layer of plot. That trend continued most recently with Need For Speed: The Run which saw actress Christina Hendricks featured prominently in the marketing leading up to the release of the game.
No cast, director, or writer have been attached at this time, but we'll bring you more details as they emerge.
